Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, presifted
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 2 Tbsp. shortening or lard
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 cup cold water
Instructions
- Sift all dry ingredients together.
- Then cut in the shortening or lard.
- Add cold water slowly so as to form a pastry dough.
- Knead for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Place in covered bowl in refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Then place dough on floured board and roll out 1/4-inch thick.
- Cut into 2 inch or 3 inch squares and drop into 350° to 375° oil.
- Press lightly with fork to make them puff up.
- Fry until a light golden brown on both sides.
- Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon or spoon on caramel.
- Serve warm.
- Makes 1 or 2 dozen, depending on the size of the squares.
