Recipe: Refried Beans – Frijoles Refritos

Summary: Eat these as a Side Dish with Cheese or as a Burrito Filler


  • 1 pound dry pinto beans (2 1/2 cups)
  • 6 cups water
  • 1/4 cup lard or bacon drippings
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed


  1. In a 3-quart covered saucepan bring beans and water to boiling.
  2. Simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or till beans are very tender.
  3. In a large heavy skillet melt lard; add beans with liquid, salt, and garlic.
  4. Mash beans completely.
  5. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat about 10 minutes or till thick, stirring often.
  6. Serve as a side dish or use as a filling tor Burritos
